  • Let Sleeping Horses Lie

    2013, March 6

    Let sleeping horses lie.

How many of you see horses “down” and go into a slight “panic” and/or rush out to “get them up” only to find out they were just trying to take a nice nap??  I know I have! The last time I was in a “panic” was shortly after Dusty joined our herd in 2010 (he is the dark bay “standing watch” over the others as they rest in the included photo)...

  • I'm a Bodyworker! I know what straight is...

    2013, March 21

    proprioception
A couple of weeks ago I had a (long overdue) session with my bodyworker. She specializes in myoskeletal (re)alignment, “more” than massage, not quite chiro (though I do have a chiropractor I visit fairly regularly). While on her table, face up, she told me to align my body where I felt I was most balanced and “straight.” Easy peasy I thought.. So I made some adjustments, gave her a nod. She asked, “this is where you feel straight and balanced?” I gave a very firm “yes, “ thinking in my head that I TOTALLY aced it! She looked at me, pursed her lips very briefly, and said, “Ohhhhkayyyy..” She then placed one hand one the side of my left ribcage, and other hand on my right hip and literally moved my ribs over a few inches. “THIS is where you’re straight,” she said. “What?!?! No way! How can that be?? I’m an animal body worker for crying out loud! I KNOW what straight and balanced is!” I thought.  She then had me line my fingers at the top of each of my hip bones and glide them to my midline. Right hand an inch or two above my left. Same thing at the bottom of my ribcage… again, right hand slightly higher than my left. “My dear,” she said, “Your proprioception is a bit off, dontcha’ think??” We then went on to discuss muscle imbalance, posture, neural pathways, and next steps to kick start my proprioceptors as she worked diligently to get me and my body back into balance. I’ll save the compensatory conversation for next time, today I want to focus briefly on *proprioception* ......

  • "Feature Friday-Inez Donmoyer-Unicorn Dreams Wholistic Touch"~ By Dutch Henry

    2013, March 22

Inez says she was born with a "horse gene" and began riding her pony Speckles when she was four. She credits Speckles with giving her the thirst to learn. Her next teacher was Kasey, a rescue horse who really needed rescuing. Inez was twenty when she took in Kasey and together they shared many happy hours. It was then that Inez began to go to horse expos and meeting the great trainers, and first realized it's important to look at life from the horse's point of view. As she explored the new-to-her ideas, she and Kasey made wonderful strides together. Kasey, Inez says, was truly a fine teacher. Through the years there have been other horses, each tasked with, and accepting the job of teaching Inez more layers of understanding. And encouraging her to learn more............

4-H Goes Bare and Booted

4-H Goes Bare and Booted

2013, March 26

I still remember one of my first 4-H meetings, the topic was trail riding. The club member presenting had a very nice power point presentation - one of the slides showed a rocky trail and she said you must shoe your horse to protect the hooves. I remember looking over to my mom in confusion, our horses were barefoot so this made no sense to me. Attitudes about shoeing have changed a lot since then. People have become more educated on the subject and are more open to barefoot horses and hoof boots. Today, almost all of the members in my 4-H group keep their horses barefoot - some members stopped shoeing and transitioned to barefoot and there are new members whose horses were already barefoot. It’s been fun talking about hoof care and hoof boots (seeing who wears what kind and arguing about which one the favorite is). The best part of 4-H is getting to ride with the other kids...........
